Roka Akor Review - Sushi from Japan & Steaks That'll Melt in Your Mouth (Financial District, SF)

Sashimi Selection - Roka Akor

Happiness is sashimi flown in from Japan four times a week to satisfy my appetite. Where have you been all my life, Roka Akor? Located in Jackson Square, the heart of the Financial District, is one hell of a sexy restaurant that sure knows how to please. Roka Akor, twin to award-winning London restaurant Roka, is an upscale modern Japanese food oasis that offers the most magnificent steaks, seafood and sushi that will leave your taste buds in full bliss.

The kitchen is led by Executive Chef Roman Petry who has 13 years of experience in international kitchens and Japanese restaurants, including Zuma in London and Hong Kong and Hachibei in Tokyo. Chef Mike Lim, formerly of Morimoto in Napa, handles the sushi and sashimi.

The instant you walk into the restaurant, you will notice the sleek wooden and glass interior design. The glass windows in the main dining section allows for nice natural lighting. It's a beautiful restaurant and has a charcoal operated robata grill in the open kitchen, which makes for a more intimate experience. While our group didn't, guests are welcomed to sit near the kitchen and talk directly to the chefs.

Our lunch took a total of 2 hours for our party of 4. The food is extremely detailed, delicate and thoughtful. The menu was diverse and offered up a lot of variety, so there is something for everyone.

There wasn't a thing ordered that we didn't like. Everything was amazing. Here's a list of everything we had and a photo recap below:

  • Heirloom Beet Salad with Shiso Crème Fraiche and Lime ($12)
  • Wagyu Flat Iron (6oz) with Maitake Mushroom and Egg Yolk ($38)
  • Sashimi Chef Selection - 7 Kinds ($46)
  • Yellowtail Sashimi with Shallots and Poached Garlic Ponzu ($13.5)
  • Crispy Fried Squid with Chili and Lime ($10)
  • Dessert Platter – Chef’s Selection ($18 per person)
    • Green Tea Custard with Banana and Chocolate Pearls
    • House-Made Sorbets and Ice Creams (Green Tea and Sesame)
    • Roasted Pineapple with Brown Butter Mango Financier and Coconut Ice Cream
    • Valhrona Chocolate Truffles
    • Assorted Fruits

Heirloom Beet Salad with Shiso Crème Fraiche and Lime ($12)

The beet salad was beautifully presented. The beets were flavorful and bright in taste. I enjoyed the microgreens with this. It was a nice and refreshing simple starter dish.

Crispy Fried Squid with Chili and Lime ($10)

The crispy fried squid was flavorful and crispy without too much breading. It was light on the greasy side. The chili and lime gave the squid a nice acidic kick.

Calamari - Roka Akor

Wagyu Flat Iron (6oz) with Maitake Mushroom and Egg Yolk ($38)

The wagyu steak was outstanding! It was luscious and grilled perfectly; tender and buttery enough to melt in your mouth. The dish comes with a raw egg yolk sauce to dip the steak in for a rich explosive combination. This was everyone's top dish of the night.

Yellowtail Sashimi with Shallots and Poached Garlic Ponzu ($13.5)

The yellowtail dish had a lovely presentation.  The bites were light and tender. The fish was tasty and the sauce has a unique flavor. It was nicely done.

Sashimi Chef Selection - 7 Kinds ($46)

The sashimi was presented in a large bowl of ice with clam shell ornaments and natural garnishes. Each pair of fish was placed on a shiso leaf. The 7 pairs of fish were the freshest fish that I've ever had in my life. It's the kind of sashimi that will make you appreciate and savor every bite.

Dessert Platter – Chef’s Selection ($18 per person)

The dessert platter consisted of the following 5 items below. We shared an order of 2 for our party of 4, which was more than enough.

  • Green Tea Custard with Banana and Chocolate Pearls: The flan-like pudding texture is covered in what might be coconut milk with bananas and crispy chocolate pearls.
  • House-Made Sorbets and Ice Creams (Green Tea and Sesame): The sesame ice cream rocked my world and resembled a peanut butter-like flavor. The green tea ice cream was dark in tea strength and flavorful. I loved both options.
  • Roasted Pineapple with Brown Butter Mango Financier and Coconut Ice Cream: I enjoyed this dessert a lot. The coconut ice cream wasn't my favorite flavor in comparison to the other two scoops of ice cream in our platter but it went nicely with the pineapple and financier.
  • Valhrona Chocolate Truffles: The dark chocolate truffles were tasty but did not match with any of the other desserts served. It was too dark for my taste.
  • Assorted Fruits: I didn't touch any of the fruits but there was a nice assortment of melons, apricots, and strawberries served that I was told was really good.

Pandan Ice Cream - Roka Akor

Overall, I would order almost every single one of these items again and choose one dessert instead of getting the dessert platter (but you have to do it at least once for the experience). I would highly recommend dining at Roka Akor whether you are looking for the highest quality sushi or the most beautiful melt-in-your mouth wagyu steak. The food gets two solid thumbs up from me!
